I live in a 55 yr & older apartment complex and am fortunate to have enough space to grow a few veggies and herbs right outside my door, but I need more. I want more. More land to garden as I take steps towards my own personal sovereignty & food security.
I once had enough land to have a small fruit orchard, berry bushes and a 1600 sq ft veggie garden. I was on hog-heaven 🐖🍅🥕🫛🌻 I want that again, but until then, I'm doing what I can.
Anyway, back at the ranch... Last season, I noticed there was a mass of chives growing in a space between the buildings which gave me the idea that this space was once a garden area. So late this winter I asked my manager if I could use this space for a veg garden. She smiled & nodded her head & said that she'd buy the 'soil'. I was thrilled. More garden space equals more food & more I can share with neighbors.
I'm a huge proponent of No-Till Gardening (aka Lasagna or Weedless gardening), but this little plot has had no TLC for at least 7 or 8 years and the grasses have taken over, so a-digging I must do.
Why you may ask... If I would have lasagna layered the cardboard (or end-of-roll newsprint) straight on top of the grasses, then added compost on top of that, the compost would have run off the barrier of cardboard, so dig I must.
I would prefer not to dig as the soil is a living biome and digging disturbs this ecosystem. This will be the only year I do dig as long as I live here and am allowed to use the space. From here on out, I will feed the soil with yearly applications of compost.
Btw, the cardboard blocks weeds and breaks down into the soil, which actually feeds the microorganisms living there. Just be sure not to use any cardboard or newsprint with color ink. Colored ink is toxic which leaches into the soil. Black ink is ok because it is usually soy based.
I started my project today and will post my progress. I'm so excited to have a 'proper' garden again.
As Jean & Kristen encourage, "Do what you can with what you have", so I'm doing my bit 🤗✨
Next? My forever Kins Domain. 😘
