I also put in a link to a video about it, haven't seen it myself yet, as I'm trying to catching up on things I need to do 🙄😅😅
Mycelium 101 (in 20 seconds)
What it is: Mycelium is the root-like network of fungi. If you grow it through agricultural fibers (hemp hurds, straw, pomace) in a mold, then heat it to stop growth, you get a lightweight, compostable bio-composite part. Ecovative’s “Mushroom® Packaging” is the classic example; it grows in about a week and home-composts quickly.
Why it matters: It can replace foams (EPS/PU) and some plastics in protective packaging and interior acoustic panels, with a circular feedstock story (local residues). It’s part of a broader global push to cut plastic waste.
Why now (policy tailwinds)
The EU’s new Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) entered into force on Feb 11, 2025 and applies from Aug 12, 2026. This accelerates demand for packaging that’s recyclable/compostable and easier to label correctly.
